WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT SOULS? IN EZEKIEL IT SAYS THAT A SOUL CAN DIE: EZEKIEL18:4 "Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die. THIS IS REPEATED IN EZE. 18:20 20 "The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. In the old testament the Hebrew word 'nephesh' is translated into English as 'soul'. Strong's interlinear has this to say: 05315. vpn nephesh, neh'-fesh Search for 05315 in KJV from 5314; properly, a breathing creature, i.e. animal of (abstractly) vitality; used very widely in a literal, accommodated or figurative sense (bodily or mental):--any, appetite, beast, body, breath, creature, X . A breathing creature is the meaning of the Hebrew word "nephesh" which was translated "soul" by the translators. So man is a breathing creature, he doesn't have a soul, he is a soul. Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. As one reads on in the book of Genesis you can see when soul is mentioned, it is speaking of the person, the physical being. The soul according to these scriptures is not a separate entity from the body, but is is the body, the mind, and the being. Lets look in the New Testament and see what it says about immortality; Romans 2:7 God, 6 who "will render to each one according to his deeds": 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; If all had immortal souls, they would not seek immortality. 1 Cor. 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." According to these scriptures we are mortal beings, not beings who possess immortality through having an immortal soul. 1 Tim. 6:14 Lord Jesus Christ's appearing, 15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen. Paul, under inspiration, writes here that no man in his present state can approach the light of immortality, that man doesn't already have it, but must acquire it. In Romans 6: 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The penalty for sin is death. If man already had immortality through an immortal soul, he could not die. |
